How to clear search history in the Google Play Store

Clearing your search history. Why does this idea have such of a stigma attached to it? I can think of at least 5 very acceptable reasons that you would need to do this, straight off the top of my head. Should you wish to delete your Google Play Store search history, for whatever reason (there are at least 5 you can choose from), we’re here to show you how.

What am I talking about

Just so I know that we’re all on the page, the Google Play Store search history is what is displayed when you go to enter your search criteria in the search bar of the Play Store. In chronological order, you will see your previously searched for apps, movies, books, or whatever else you wanted to find in there.

How to delete the Play Store search history

  • Go to the Google Play Store on your Android device.
  • Tap the top left corner on the Play Store symbol to open the menu.
  • Tap Settings
  • Tap Clear Search History

And that’s it. You won’t be presented with a “would you like to continue?” or a “confirm action menu” - you won’t even know if it has worked. Just go back to the search bar and tap in it, you will find that none of your previous searches are present.

How to charge your Android phone battery faster

What’s worse than a dead phone? One that takes too long to charge! This has certainly happened to most of us before: you’re rushing out of the door and you happen to see there’s just 5% left of battery! Here are some tips on how you can get your Android phone to charge faster!

The right plug and charger

First of all, you want to ensure that you plug your phone into the wall socket, and in the best case scenario, using the charger that came with your phone, though nowadays, Android device chargers are universal. If you are in a hurry, avoid plugging your phone into your computer or laptop, because this will definitely slow down the charging speed, as will Qi wireless charging.

Get into airplane mode

Now enable airplane mode on your device to speed up charging. Depending on your device, there could be various ways to get to this. For example, on my Nexus 5, I simply long press on the power button, and select airplane mode when it appears. You can also go into the Quick Settings, by swiping down with two fingers. Every device is different, but you most likely know how to turn it on. Airplane mode blocks any wireless radios on your device, which means you won’t receive any calls, messages, internet access etc, but it’s all worth it when you think you’ll have a device that will still be on for the next few hours.

Turn that bad boy off

If you don’t actually need your phone at the moment, go ahead and turn it off completely. Obviously, any alarms or notifications won’t come through when it is off, but this is something you might just need to live without if you are racing the clock.

Switch off unnecessary features

Check to see if you have any unnecessary features on, like Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi, NFC etc. Close out of all your apps and stop your phone from doing any automatic backups or updating apps from the Google Play Store. These are just small, but golden tips when you are in a rush. Plus, everything can be easily switched back to normal when you’re out of the door and sitting in the train or bus. That being said, we highly discourage doing this if you are driving.

Switch off some system features if you aren't using them

Dont touch!

If you need to have your phone on though, and even want to leave it off airplane mode, because you have an important call, message or something of the sort, try to suppress the urge to check your phone every thirty seconds. Why? Because the screen is the biggest battery drainer of them all.

What to do when Google Play isn't working

Each Android user has probably experienced the Google Play Store suddenly crashing and burning. Whether you get a Google Play Store error message when downloading apps or the Play Store just doesn’t work when you launch it, it’s all just really annoying. Here are some tips for Google Play Store problems when things just aren't working.

1. Empty the cache

In most cases, you just need to empty the cache of the Play Store app. This is a storage area that will temporarily hold data which can then quickly be retrieved again without needing to be reloaded, meaning a page will load quicker.
In order to empty the Play Store cache, you just need to open the settings and find the Apps section. Now choose ‘All’ and find the Google Play Store. Tap on it and press on the ‘Empty Cache’ button. Now when you open Google Play, it should run as before.

In the individual app page for Google Play, you can delete the cache, data and uninstall updates.

2. Delete data

If the first tip didn’t work, then you can try deleting the data from the Play Store. This pretty much sets the app back to square one and gets rid of your saved information - hopefully including whatever was causing the problem. The option is again found by following the same route as above, but this time you tap on ‘Delete Data’.

3. Uninstall Play Store updates

Even this can help. Sometimes an update will get Google Play all out of whack, so it makes sense to uninstall an update, which you do by going into the settings, search for Google Play Store and press the button that says  ‘Uninstall Updates’.
This will revert Google Play back to the original version (as it appeared when it was first installed on your device), so you may want to then search for the second newest Play Store version and update to that. A very reliable source of Google Play Store APKs is APK Mirror.

4. Google Play Services

Should Google Play still not work, then emptying the cache for Google Play Services could do the trick. Go to the application manager in your settings, look for Google Play Services and press the ‘Empty Cache’ button.

Choose the Play Store Services from the App Manager section of your settings and then clear the cache.

4. Activate Download Manager

If you have deactivated the Download Manager, Google Play won’t work anymore. To get it back, go to Settings, then App Manager (or equivalent) and head to the All apps tab. Search for Download Manager and tap on the activate button. However, if this button says deactivate, no worries, this means that the Download Manager is already active.

6. Remove Google account and reinstate

Go back into the settings of your phone, but this time to ‘Accounts’ and choose Google and select the Google account that you use for Google Play.
Tap the action overflow button (the three vertical dots in the top right corner) or menu soft button on a Samsung device and choose ‘Remove Account’. Confirm your choice and reboot your smartphone. Reinstate your Google account once it has completely loaded by going through Settings > Accounts > Add Account > Google.

To fix a faulty Google account, remove the account and add it again

7. Perform Factory Data Reset of your smartphone

If you’ve done everything written above and still to no avail, then you might need to resort to the ultimate step of performing a Factory Data Reset of your phone. This could be your only way out of Google Play misery. However, be forewarned that all of your data will be lost, so it is super important to perform a complete backup beforehand.
To perform a Factory Data Reset you go to your Settings once again, then ‘Backup and Reset’ and select ‘Factory Data Reset’ at the bottom of the list. Your smartphone will start anew and revert back to how it was when you first got it. Once the process is complete, you can set it up again as before and restore the backup.

Make sure the box is ticked for ''Back up my data''.

8. For rooted users: edit host files

If the Play Store won't load for you and your device is rooted, you have an even simpler solution at hand: just modify your Hosts file for a quick fix. Go to your preferred file manager and head to the root directory. Locate system/etc/hosts and open with the Edit option.
Add a hashtag (#) to the front of the second set of numbers and save your changes (i.e. change from 127.0.0.1 to #127.0.0.1). Reboot and re-add your Google account and your Google Play Store problems should be fixed.

How to disable auto-install of Google Play apps

As a general rule, the apps from the Google Play store will download updates automatically in order to improve their performance on your tablet or smartphone, which can also be quite annoying as it slows down your phone, uses up your mobile data and interrupts you as you do other things with the device.

It is recommended in most cases to update your apps, as developers work hard to improve them to be more intuitive and incorporate better designs and performance. But having them all update at once is hardly a good thing. For this reason, many people prefer to manually install app updates rather than updating everything (or nothing) at once. In order to do this, you must disable the auto-update apps feature, which is easy to do.

How to disable auto-update of apps in Google Play

1. Launch the Google Play Store app and swipe out the navigation drawer on the left hand side, or use the ''hamburger'' menu at the top left (the three lines next to the words Play Store). Choose settings.

2. You’ll be presented with the Play Store settings options and under the ‘General’ subcategory choose ‘Auto-update apps’ which will state the current setting of this function.

Hit Settings and you'll just need to change from ''update over Wi-Fi'' to ''do not auto-update.

3. Tapping on this option will provide you with three options which can be reconfigured at any time. You have either 1) Do not auto-update apps 2) Auto-update apps at any time. Data Charges may apply and 3) Auto-update apps over Wifi only.

4. Choose the first one which means you will always need to manually launch an update in the future, if you so desire. You should still receive update notifications to alert you when an app needs updating though. Of course, if you still want apps to update automatically, just not on your data connection, select the third option.

How to manually update apps in the Play Store

If you've told the Play Store to not auto-update apps, you'll have to do it manually. To manually update an app, you must go to your list of apps, so swipe out the navigation drawer and select ''My Apps.''

Check ''My apps'' for available updates and install one at a time or all at once

You will be shown a list divided into two sections: either all of the installed apps on your phone currently or all apps you've ever downloaded from the Play Store. Apps that have updates available are listed at the top of the ''Installed'' tab. You can choose to install them one at a time or all of them with the ''Update All'' button at the top.

How to recover deleted text messages from an Android smartphone

If you've accidentally deleted text messages by mistake, fret not! You can get lost SMS back with a 99% chance of success, but there's one ingredient that is most important: time! If you've deleted your SMS inbox you have to act quick, because the messages are only recoverable until the portion of memory on which they are saved is rewritten. So the longer you wait the higher the likelihood of getting new text messages, app updates or who-knows-what saved to the same location, obliterating them forever. Here's how to recover lost text messages on Android.

Tools to recover deleted SMS

There are a couple of different PC-based tools to help you through this part of the process, and of course, also for Mac users. Generally speaking they are free (or have a free trial) and do the job equally as well as one another.
The particular tool you choose will depend on your personal preference, but they all do basically the same thing: scan your Android's memory, identify and recover your ''deleted'' messages. They'll all walk you through the process, which is usually only four steps long: connect, scan, preview, recover. The process works for other data besides text messages as well. Some programs worth trying out include:

  1. Coolmuster Android SMS+Contacts recovery
  2. Android Data Recovery

How To Turn Your Android Phone Into A Wi-Fi Hotspot?

There are times when you need a shared Internet connection. For instance, if your data plan is over or the net connection goes down, you must borrow Internet from someone (sometimes from your nasty cousin). Or suppose you’ve got some works to do in your computer, but there are no ways you can access the network from it. And moreover, if you want to steal your cousin’s Internet plan, nothing can help you better than the Wi Fi Hotspot. In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to create a Wi-Fi zone with your android mobilewithout installing any third party app!

It’s really an easy process and you don’t need any ninja-craft to turn your favorite android smartphone into a super-duper Wi-Fi hotspot instantly. So grab your seatbelt, you’re about to evolve into a walking Wi Fi zone.

Follow the simple steps below:

  1. First of all go to Settings.
  2. Now in the Wireless and Networking section click on More
  3. Next navigate to the option Tethering and portable hotspot.
  4. There simply switch on the Wi-Fi hotspot (by sliding the switch)
That’s it. Now you can easily connect your computer or any other device to Internet. To do that just switch on the Wi-Fi on that device. Then it will automatically show down the list of Wi-Fi networks available (including your newly created Wi-Fi hotspot). Just connect to that and you're done.

Customizing The Wi-Fi Name:

If you want to give your Wi-Fi a custom name, at first tap on the Wi-Fi hotspot option (in the Tethering & portable hotspot section). Now press Set up Wi-Fi hotspot. And change the Network SSID to any name you want.

Setting Up a Password:

To set a password to your Wi-Fi hotspot follow the same path as you did while naming your Wi-Fi (i.e. Go toTethering & portable hotspot > Wi-Fi hotspot > Set up Wi-Fi hotspot). Now below the Network SSID, you should notice a Security option. Found it? Great. By default it remains set to Open. Change it to WPA2 PSK. And soon after you do that, a password field should arise. Erase whatever’s written up there and type down any desired password you want.
